In Assam, floods and landslides kill nine people and affect millions

Kathmandu, May 19

In Assam, floods and landslides have killed at least nine people. Over six million people in 27 districts have been impacted by the floods. Floods caused by monsoon rains have forced
thousands of people to evacuate their homes. There have been 48,000 individuals evacuated to 248 different relief camps so far.

Hojai and Kachar are the worst-affected districts. In these districts, almost two lakh individuals have been affected. Over 2,000 people were rescued by the army in the Hojai district. Floods have also caused chaos on the Dima Haso area in southern Assam.

Floodwaters have washed down power lines and destroyed roadways, hampering rescue attempts. Meanwhile, the government would offer Rs 4 lakh to each flood victim’s family. For the previous two days, the northern Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh have been flooded.
