A House panel has ordered the government to introduce a new citizenship law as soon as possible.

Kathmandu, December 24

The House Committee on Law, Justice, and Human Rights has directed the government to
introduce a measure as quickly as possible to replace the country’s citizenship laws.

The committee’s head, Krishna Bhakta Pokharel, told Dilendra Prasad Badu, Minister of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, not to postpone the law-making process during a meeting today.

There have been efforts for several years to bring the new citizenship law into compliance with the 2015 constitution’s provisions. However, disagreements between and among significant political factions have prevented it from moving forward.

The delay has deprived children of Nepali citizenship by birth.

A draft of the law has already been considered by the Law, Justice, and Human Rights
Committee, and it has been forwarded to the Parliament Secretariat with modifications.
