Woman crushed to death by elephant

Kathmandu, June 19

A woman has been killed in an elephant attack in Tikapur of Kailali district. The deceased has been identified as Tanka Sodari, 50, of Tikapur Municipality-1, according to the Area Police Office, Tikapur.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Hem Bahadur Shahi, two elephants came out of the forest at Sankatighat on the bank of Karnali River on Saturday evening and attacked Sodari who was returning home after working on the embankment of the river.

Three other women were collecting stones to build an embankment along the river. According to eyewitnesses, Sodari was trampled to death by an elephant.

The incidents of attack of wild animals have been increasing in Kailali and Bardiya districts as of late, with dozens of people killed every year in the area around the forest.
