Dev Gurung warns: Nepal could be second Ukraine!

Kathmandu, June 10

CPN-Maoist Center leader Dev Gurung has said that the upcoming visit of the Chief of Army
Staff and the Prime Minister to the United States should be postponed keeping in view the
national security sensitivities of Nepal.

Leader Gurung said that the number of US officials visiting Nepal has increased in recent times and their activities are aimed at bringing Nepal into a military alliance. “If Nepal joins the US military alliance, Nepal will have to face the situation of Ukraine,” he said.

Gurung argues that postponing the visit of the Prime Minister and the Chief of Army Staff to the United States will only benefit the country. Participating in the discussion on the budget in the House of Representatives meeting on Thursday, Gurung said that the United States was trying to include Nepal in the state partnership as per its military strategy and called on the Nepali side to be alert and vigilant to stop it.

“According to the media, the issue of the Chief of Army Staff’s visit to the United States is beingraised. But the agenda of the visit is not clear. As the Minister of Defense, the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s visit to the United States is also being discussed,” said Gurung.

“First of all, in this situation, that visit is not necessary. I would also like to request that the visit of the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the visit of the Chief of Army Staff be postponed,” Gurung said.

Gurung urged to postpone his visit to the US due to national security concerns.
“With the military presence in the West and the US military alliance, there is a danger that the situation in Nepal could become serious and frightening,” said Gurung.

Gurung, who is also a former minister, said that Nepal should move ahead only through
national consensus on the issue of military strategy and stressed on the need to make Nepal non-aligned.

Gurung suggested that the Ministry of Defense should play a special role in moving forward
according to the constitution of Nepal.
