Former President Anez jailed for 10 years for violating constitution

Kathmandu, June 11

Jeanine Anez, the former president of Bolivia, has been sentenced to ten years in jail.
On Friday, almost a year after her arrest, a judge sentenced her to ten years in jail.
Anez, who is now 54 years old, was arrested in March 2021 and is currently facing charges in a court of law.

She had strongly denied the claims made against her. She said that she admitted to her crimes after being tortured.

Despite the fact that former president Anez denied the claims, the court found her guilty and sentenced her to life in prison, sending her to a women’s jail. According to officials, she is being held at the La Paz jail.

According to the court, she was sentenced because she was judged to have committed a crime that went beyond her constitutional obligations and rights.

Her opponents wanted a sentence of 15 years in jail. She has been charged with a variety of offenses while she was a senator before becoming president.

Since November 2019, right-wing politician Anez has served as Bolivia’s interim president for nearly one year. She formerly served as Vice President of the Bolivian Senate. Following the departure of then-President Ivo Morales, she announced her resignation as temporary president.

After huge protests around the country over suspected election cheating, Morales was forced to quit. She claimed refuge in Mexico after resigning, claiming she was insecure. It was easy forAnez to assume the role of interim president even after she had left the nation.
Anez worked as a lawyer and a famous television host before entering politics (AFP).
