Kathmandu, June 8
The Ministry of Health and Population has urged governmental, private, and non-governmental organizations to provide female employees with 14 weeks (98 days) of paid maternity leave.
On Wednesday, the ministry issued a notification indicating that women working in
government, private, and non-profit organizations had not received the mandatory maternity leave and ordered that the leave be strictly implemented.
Article 13 of the Right to Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Act, 2075 states that
women employees working in private governmental and non-governmental organizations
obtain maternity leave with payment for at least 98 days before or after birth.
Health professionals have been requesting the expansion of maternity leave to six months.
