UML prepares to bring an impeachment motion against four judges

CPN-UML is preparing to file an impeachment motion against four judges.

UML is preparing to file an impeachment motion against judges Deepak Kumar Karki, Mira Khadka, Ishwar Khatiwada, and Ananda Mohan Bhattarai.

UML has called a meeting of the parliamentary parties at 11 am today to discuss the impeachment motion. A UML official told news channels that the signatures of the lawmakers would be collected at the meeting and the impeachment motion would be registered.

On the question of preparation of impeachment motion against the judges, UML chief Bishal Bhattarai urged them to wait till the meeting of the parliamentary parties. He told news channels, “Now I have reached Balkot. Whatever decision is taken by the meeting of the parliamentary party, please wait till then.”

On Sunday, 98 lawmakers from the ruling coalition filed an impeachment motion against Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher JBR. Karki has been made the acting Chief Justice after the impeachment motion was filed.

After the impeachment motion was filed against JBR, UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli said in an emergency meeting of the UML secretariat on Sunday evening that an impeachment motion should be brought against the judges who decided to reconstitute the parliament. However, leaders including Yogesh Bhattarai and Subhas Nemwang said that it should not be done, but Oli did not comply, sources said.

Oli’s dissolution of parliament was declared unconstitutional by a five-member constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice JBR on July 12 (Asar 28) and an order was issued to appoint Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba as prime minister. Judges Deepak Kumar Karki, Mira Khadka, Ishwar Khatiwada, and Ananda Mohan Bhattarai were members of the Constitutional Court.

Equal but opposite reaction: Rimal

The UML secretariat meeting had decided to reject the impeachment motion against JBR, concluding that it was a conspiratorial move against the court, democracy, and sovereignty.

UML Deputy General Secretary BishnuRimal has remarked that the impeachment motion against JBR has thrown stones at UML. Stating that there will be equal but the opposite reaction in every action, Rimal wrote on social media today, “The so-called alliance has thrown stones at the peaceful opposition UML.” The stone has fallen on the top. ‘

He further wrote, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction!”
