Ambassadors vacant in 20 countries

Out of the total 30 embassies in different countries, the post of ambassador in 20 Nepali
embassies has been vacant for a long time. Diplomats say it is not good for the post of
ambassador to remain vacant at a time when international cooperation, goodwill and bilateral ties need to be strengthened in the wake of the Covid-19 epidemic.

Nepal has succeeded in establishing bilateral diplomatic relations with 171 countries of the
world. Foreign expert Madan Kumar Bhattarai says that the embassy, which is an essential
means of establishing good relations, will have only nominal diplomatic relations when it is
vacant.

He said that while the post of ambassador was vacant, Nepal’s representation abroad could be questioned. The names of the ambassadors of the three countries have been sent to the
respective countries after the completion of the parliamentary hearings, but so far only the
United Kingdom has received approval. The appointment of the ambassador has been delayed due to lack of approval from India and the United States.

Nepal has established 30 embassies in different countries to keep the international relations in balance. There are also three permanent missions to the United Nations in New York, Geneva and Vienna. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has an organizational structure with seven consulates in Lhasa, Calcutta, Hong Kong, Jeddah, New York, Guangzhou and Qingdao.
