Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said that the government was committed to hold local
elections within the date stipulated in the constitution. At a meeting of the top leaders of the ruling coalition parties held at the PM’s residence in Baluwatar on Tuesday, Prime Minister Deuba said that the government was holding elections as per the provisions of the constitution to make federalism strong and successful. The meeting discussed the National Assembly elections, local level elections and preparations for the national elections.
The meeting also agreed to hold local level elections as per the constitution. It has been
decided that the date of the election will be decided after further discussions and preparations in the internal meetings of the parties. After the meeting, government spokesperson and Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki informed that the parties have agreed to hold the election within the provisions of the constitution.
According to him, a meeting will be held between the parties on this issue after doing more
homework. He said, “We are aware of the need to conduct local elections by holding elections on time as per the constitution to strengthen federalism. That is why local elections are held on time.”
According to Minister Karki, the government is also consulting with the Election Commission on the issue of elections and the government will take a decision soon. After the meeting,
Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center) leader Dev Prasad Gurung also said that the parties had agreed to hold the election in accordance with the constitutional provisions.
The Election Commission has suggested the government to hold local elections on Baishakh 14 and 22. Officials of the Election Commission have already met Prime Minister Deuba and
informed him about the Commission’s preparations for holding local elections.
