The World Health Organization has projected that half of Europe will be infected with the
Omicron variant in the next six to eight weeks. According to Dr. Hans Klug, the omicron wave is moving from west to east along with the delta variant.
He said the projection was based on the addition of 7 million new infections in the first week of 2022. The number of infected people has more than doubled in two weeks. According to Dr. Klug, the Seattle-based Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation predicts that 50 percent of Europe’s population will be infected with Omicron in the next six to eight weeks.
Recent studies have found that Omicron is more contagious than its predecessor, although it has the potential to make people seriously ill. It can also infect people who have been fully vaccinated.
