Fight against Covid should not affect the economy: Finance Secretary

Kathmandu, Janauary 9

Secretary at the Ministry of Finance Madhu Kumar Marasini has said that the policy should be taken in a way that does not affect the economy in the fight against COVID-19.

Speaking at the Public Accounts Committee on Sunday, Secretary Marasini said that the
economy was the lifeline of the country and that policies should be taken to minimize its
impact. He said that if this could be done, the target of economic growth rate of the current
fiscal year could be achieved.

”A third variant of Covid is coming, and the economy is moving in the right direction. To be able to maintain it, at least economic activity should be affected,” he said.

Stating that the capital expenditure has started picking up speed after January, he said that
such expenditure will increase in January. Stating that the government is vigilant so that the economy does not fall into the trap, he said that policies are being taken to solve the problem.

”Some of the effects are already being felt, some in the long run,” he said.
Stating that the import of silver has decreased due to the recent policy, he also informed that the airport has been tightened to bring gold. Due to this, 155 kg of unpaid gold has been seized from the airport.

According to him, its market value is Rs 1.22 billion and the government has raised Rs 147
million through it.
