Twenty-five Nepalis living in prison in Malaysia have returned home

After reaching Malaysia for foreign employment, 25 Nepalis living in jail for various reasons
have returned home. At the initiative of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), 25
Nepalis, including two women, returned home on Thursday.

Rajkumar Shah, 38, of Saptari, who was sentenced to death in Malaysia, is also among those returning. On July 29, 2018, the High Court convicted Rajkumar and two other Malaysians of drug trafficking and sentenced them to death.

After the death sentence was handed down by the high court, Raj Kumar had appealed to the high court with the financial and other support of the Nepali embassy there. Raj Kumar, who had been sentenced to death, had dropped the charges against him. Finally, on July 13, 2020, the Supreme Court upheld Raj Kumar’s appeal and reduced his sentence to 10 years in prison and 10 lashes.

On Thursday, 25 Nepalis, including Raj Kumar, were repatriated on the same flight. The 25
Nepalis have been released from jail and repatriated through the relief and rescue program
under the Foreign Employment and Welfare Department of the Association coordinated by the Vice President of the Association Dr. Badri KC.

Shah, Bhupendra Bhandari, Himachal Mauria, OK Kumar Yadav, Tikaram Praja, Parasnath Yadav, Karna Bahadur Tamang, Hridesh Kewat, Rajkumar Shah, Krishnakumar Mandal, Kamulla Mia, Rajkumar Majhi, Karna Bahadur Pun, Bel Bahadur Thami, Purna Bahadur Sunari, Ash Bahadur Kami, Baburam Thapa, Dishan Sunar, Sanjay Kumar Yadav, Jaglal Tamang, Ramnath Pandit, Sapna Tamang, Junumaya Bomjan, Balan Rai and Chhatra Bahadur Neupane have been rescued from jail and brought to Nepal.

After landing in Kathmandu, they were accommodated in the shelter of the Pravasi Nepali
Coordinating Committee (PNCC) under the coordination of the association.
