Birgunj metropolis raised 180 million rupees in five months

Birgunj Municipal Corporation has collected 180 million rupees in the first five months of the current Fiscal Year 2078/79. From Shrawan 2078 to Mangsir, revenue of Rs. 187.32 million has been collected under various headings.

Pawan Pradhan, an official of the Revenue Management Division, said that they have managed to collect 20 percent more revenue as compared to the last fiscal year 077/078. In the first five months of the last fiscal year, the office had collected revenue of Rs 154.982 million.

The official said that the provision of various facilities to encourage the city dwellers to pay
taxes has had a positive impact on revenue collection.

The metropolis has set a target of collecting revenue of Rs. 954.74 million in the current fiscal year.

Arun Basnet, chief of the revenue branch of the Birgunj Municipal Corporation, says that the revenue collection is planned to be increased next year even though the revenue has been collected as per the target.

He said that the revenue has also improved as tax breaks have been introduced and city
dwellers have been encouraged to pay taxes through various schemes.

The metropolis has given 10 percent exemption in land and property tax and business tax till mid-January of the current fiscal year. Property tax on industries, shopping malls, hospitals and schools has been reduced by 50 percent.

He said that the metropolis is making all possible efforts to strengthen the internal revenue. The metropolis has been urging the city dwellers to pay their taxes on time, saying, ”Let’s take advantage of the tax exemption and pay taxes on time, avoid fines and make the city of Birgunj prosperous.”

Mayor Vijay Kumar Sarawgi claims that the scientific tax system has been implemented in such a way that those who earn more and those who earn less are taxed less. He also said that arrangements are being made to pay taxes from the ward office.

”There are 16 urban and 16 rural wards in Birgunj. Everyone has to come to Birgunj to pay taxes," he said.” Some wards have been made technology-friendly.

He said that preparations are being made to make all the 16 added wards technology friendly and decide to pay recommendation fee, property and business tax from the wards.
