Madagascar shipwreck: Death toll rises to 85

Kathmandu, December 23

At least 85 people have been killed in a shipwreck off the coast of Madagascar.

The death toll rose to 85 after marine officials removed 21 bodies on Thursday.

Maritime officials said 138 people were on board the 12-foot-long boat that sank on Monday and only 50 were rescued. Five children are among the dead.

The unmanned wooden vessel was heading about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south from the
village of Ant-sera to Soanierana-Ivongo.

According to Adrian Fabris Ratsimbazafy of the River and Maritime Ports Agency, preliminary investigations have revealed a “technical problem” with the ship’s engine.
