China-US ties show positive signs despite severe challenges: Chinese Ambassador to the US

China-US relations have recently shown some positive signs of stabilizing under the joint efforts of both sides, despite bilateral ties still facing serious difficulties and severe challenges, Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng said when meeting with a delegation from the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai (AmCham Shanghai).

There is still a long way to go to stabilize and improve relations between the world’s two largest economies, and the key is to follow the three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation so as to find a correct way for both sides to get along in the new era, the ambassador said on September 28, according to a post on the website of the Chinese Embassy in the US on Wednesday.

Xie also expressed hope that the business community, as an important “stakeholder” in bilateral ties, will continue to serve as a bond of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation between China and the US, and contribute their best to deepening and expanding exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting, the delegation of AmCham Shanghai provided a briefing on the key findings of AmCham Shanghai’s 2023 China Business Report and voiced their appreciation for recent Chinese efforts to improve the business climate such as the issuance of the State Council’s 24 measures, according to the website of the AmCham Shanghai.

“Fully implementing these measures will increase confidence,” said the delegation.

In August, the State Council issued a statement outlining its guidelines regarding further optimizing the foreign investment environment and strengthening efforts to attract foreign investment. The guidelines are aimed at improving the overall balance between domestic and international situations and foster a world-class business environment that is market-oriented, law-based, and internationalized.

Xie also introduced the overall recovery of China’s economy this year and emphasized that the fundamentals of China’s long-term economic growth have not and will not change. Choosing China means embracing opportunities and securing the future, he said.

While facing some difficulties and challenges, the Chinese economy has been on an upward trajectory generally. GDP grew 5.5 percent in the first half of the year, outpacing most major economies. In the first eight months, investment in high-tech industries grew 11 percent on a yearly basis, and retail sales in accommodation, catering and other services increased 19 percent, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed.
