—Interview with Mahendra Bahadur Pandey, former Ambassador of Nepal to China
The reporter: You ever said in an interview that China’s experience in poverty alleviation is worth learning by the rest of the world. In which aspects do you think can Nepal and China enhance poverty alleviation cooperation?
Mr. Pandey: Poverty remains a serious issue in many countries in the world. To make things worse, these countries often also have to grapple with disease issues. As a result, alleviating poverty has been a hard nut for them to crack all along. Compared with China’s poverty alleviation achievements, Nepal still has a long way to go. China has led its people to shake off poverty in such a short time. I do think such a great success cannot be achieved without the excellent leadership of Chinese leaders and government and the hard work of diligent Chinese people. China has mobilized all the resources needed to improve people’s living standards, and set an example for worldwide countries in poverty alleviation.
If we look back upon China’s poverty alleviation journey, we will see that many China’s strategic plans and moves–for example, how to formulate poverty alleviation plans and choose poverty alleviation projects, adjusting the plans according to local social and economic conditions and resource endowments, and mobilizing social resources–are very enlightening for countries like us facing poverty issues. Another factor which, I think, is key to China’s winning the poverty alleviation fight is policy continuation. Of course, it takes way, way more work to succeed in poverty alleviation. So we hope Chinese leaders, experts, scholars and scientists can display more China’s experience in this regard and worldwide leaders can learn from China.
