The government has amended a new bill on citizenship in the House of Representatives.

In the meeting held on Wednesday, Home Minister Bal Krishna Khan amended the Nepal Citizenship (First Amendment) Bill, 2079 BS.

Earlier, UML MP Bhim Bahadur Rawal, Sher Bahadur Tamang, and NWPP MP Prem Suwal presented the notice of protesting against the proposal to seek permission to present the bill in the meeting.

Meanwhile, Rawal objected that the latest bill on citizenship was opening the door to foreigners.

He said that it was not appropriate to bring a new bill on citizenship after withdrawing the previous bill after a long discussion on the previous bill.

Similarly, another UML MP Tamang objected to some of the issues in the new bill. Similarly, NWPP MP Suwal had said that the Citizenship Bill should not be moved forward against the national interest.

The meeting had rejected the protest notices of all the three MPs. Giving information on the bill in the meeting, Home Minister Khan claimed that the Citizenship Act Amendment Bill was introduced as per the provisions of the constitution.

He said that the bill was brought to solve the problem of people who were deprived of citizenship by including the issues agreed upon in the previous bill.

He clarified that the previous bill had been withdrawn as there was no consensus on the bill. As soon as it is introduced in the House of Representatives, a new citizenship bill has been moved for further process.
