India blocks supply of explosives to China-linked projects

India has stopped supplying explosives to projects involving Chinese investors and contractors in Nepal. Some projects have come to a standstill due to non-availability of explosives to be used in the construction of roads, hydro-power and tunnel projects.

Many hydropower and road projects have been affected due to lack of explosives. The work of Madhyatmore, Rasuwa Bhotekoshi, Sanjen Khola and Nilgiri hydropower project have been affected. India is also reluctant to supply explosives to the Kimathanka hydro-power project due to its proximity to the Chinese border.

The Petroleum and Security Organization under the Government of India had written to the concerned bodies of Nepal on April 13 stating that the supply of the explosives were banned. A week later, on April 19, India sent another letter informing it that exports had been reopened. But since then, there has been no easy supply, according to explosives suppliers and development project promoters.
