On July 13, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is set to resign immediately from office. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament, has been told about this by him.
Speaker Gotabaya said on Saturday that he will resign immediately on July 13 in a statement from his office.
According to a statement released by the Speaker’s Office, President Gotabaya took the decision based on demands made by various political parties in Sri Lanka.
Ranil Wickremesinghe, the prime minister, had earlier declared his intention to leave office. The resignation of President Gotabaya and Prime Minister Bikram Singh has been demanded by political groups. They reportedly made the decision to quit based on the same demand.
Protesters broke into the prime minister’s and president Gotabaya’s homes on Saturday. Even the home of Prime Minister Bikram Singh was set on fire.
According to local media, President Gotabaya also left his official house on Saturday.
