Mobile imports declined

Kathmandu, June 23

Imports of mobile devices are decreasing. Mobile phone imports used to total more than Rs 2 billion on a monthly average, but they have been declining over the past two months.

Mobile phones worth Rs. 1.12 billion were imported in May, according to the customs department.

While smart phone imports in April totaled Rs. 1.96 billion. In the second week of April, the
government stopped the importation of mobile phones valued at more than $600.

The government decided to restrict imports of nine items, including mobile phones, above that amount as pressure on foreign exchange reserves increased. Mobile phones, one of the top five imported goods in Nepal, have declined since that decision, according to departmental statistics.
