The decision to stop construction of Nijgadh Airport does not seem appropriate: International Relations Committee

Kathmandu, June 20

The House of Representatives’ International Relations Committee has decided that the decision to stop the building project is not appropriate from any viewpoint. This is noted in the committee’s annual report 2079, which was passed on Sunday.

”From any point of view, the decision to stop the development of the Nijgadh International Airport of national pride, which was carried out with a long-term research and large expenditure aimed at developing Nepal’s economy in the national interest, does not appear right,” the report stated.

The committee concluded that delaying the building of Nijgadh Airport will further harm
Nepal’s economy, which is already suffering under the burden of foreign and domestic debts, by wasting billions of rupees already invested in the airport’s development.

The government’s plan to build an airport at Nijgadh was rejected by the Supreme Court, which ordered the government to explore alternatives. This subject is being discussed from a number of viewpoints. The Supreme Court’s order has been discussed several times by the International Relations Committee.

The International Relations Committee has asked the government to speed up the building of the Nijgadh International Airport, stating that it is critical for national security, economic
growth, and national interest.

The government has been ordered to take the required legal, administrative, and practical
steps to go forward with the building of Nijgadh International Airport, according to the
committee’s annual report.

The committee’s annual report will be presented to the House of Representatives soon, according to committee head Pavitra Niraula Kharel. ”We will provide certain language difficulties in the report to the House soon,” said committee head Pavitra Niraula Kharel.
