The Commerce Department asked the traders about the increase in sugar price

Kathmandu, June 17

The Department of Commerce, Supplies, and Consumer Protection have asked traders to
explain why the price of sugar has risen so quickly.

Sugar producers and dealers have been contacted by the department, who have been
questioned why the price of sugar has increased since India put a restriction on sugar exports.

After receiving several complaints regarding the price of sugar, Director General of the
Department Lila Prasad Sharma stated that they have asked for information about its
availability and pricing in the market. ”This time, we talked to sugar producers, salt traders, and food management and trading firms,” Sharma explained. We wanted an explanation after private-sector manufacturers and traders reported that the price had increased.

Traders claimed during the discussion that there was no scarcity of sugar on the market, but that the expense was due to price rises. The department stated that the government-owned company lacked sugar and that no purchase process had been started.

Sugar’s market price has risen to Rs 110 per kg, up from Rs 95 per kg just a few days earlier.
