Nepalgunj tense after police use force to remove King Birendra’s statue

Kathmandu, June 2

The town of Nepalgunj has been tense since police forcibly removed a statue of the late King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah on Thursday morning. A monarchist group installed the statue in Birendra Chowk or Dhamboji, Nepalgunj, to mark the 21st anniversary of the royal palace massacre.

When the police tried to remove the statue, some people reportedly pelted stones at police. While the area is tense, some policemen are said to have been injured in the incident.

Some independent activists, nationalist youth groups, and RPP leaders and activists had
gathered at the place today to restore the statue of Birendra, referring to the day of the Durbar massacre.
