Arrested for cheating 2.879 million online by abusing social media

Kathmandu, May 24

A man from the capital has been arrested on accusations of cheating online through the use of social media. Utsav Shrestha, 35, of Dolakha Shailung Gaonpalika-8, Shailungeshwari, who resides in Sohrakhutte of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-17, is among those arrested.

On Monday, he was arrested by police at the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, Min Bhawan. According to the authorities, he misleads the victims by pretending to work at a casino in Cambodia on social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Emo, Botim, and Viber.

According to the authorities, he earned $627,611 from a lottery in the United States and used different misleading communications to acquire the money, and the victims were fooled into thinking he used various misleading messages to gain the money. He reportedly scammed victims of Rs 2.879 million by forcing them to deposit money in the bank accounts of other persons in Nepal, according to the police.

He has been sent to Kathmandu’s District Police Complex for further action.
