North Korea declares the first official Covid infection and orders a nationwide lockdown

Kathmandu, May 12

After confirming its first official Covid infection, North Korea has imposed a strict countrywide lockdown. State-run media in Pyongyang announced an omikron infection, but did not specify how many cases had been reported.

It was described by KCNA as a ‘serious emergency’ that violated the country’s ‘quarantine front.’ Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, is said to be in emergency discussions.

However, experts believe the virus has been spreading in the nation for a long time. North
Korea has not given the Covid-19 vaccine to its citizens. North Korea has turned down offers of synovial and hormone vaccines developed in China. Since the outbreak began, the country has been attempting to contain the virus by keeping its borders closed.
