Kathmandu, May 10

President Bidya Devi Bhandari has wished happiness, peace, and prosperity to all Nepalis living at home and abroad on the occasion of Sita Jayanti.

In a message today, President Bhandari extended her best wishes on the occasion of the
emergence of Sita, daughter of King Janak and luminary of Nepal. Sita Jayanti, also the day Sita came into being, is observed on the day that falls on the ninth day of the waxing moon in the month of Baisakh according to the lunar calendar.

The day is observed with the worship of Sita in all Ram and Sita temples across the country
including in Janakpur, the center of the ancient Mithila kingdom, and singing hymns in the glory of Sita.

Sita, who is also known as Janaki, Baidehi, and Janakanandini among others, is believed to
possess incredible strength and wealth of knowledge. She was married off to Lord Ram,
believed to be the 10th incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Hindu Mythology.

President Bhandari, in her message, stated that it was a matter of pride for Nepal and Nepalis that Sita, an epitome of an ideal woman, belongs to Nepal.

Bhandari expressed her confidence that may this day inspire us all to end all kinds of gender, social and cultural prejudices and disparity and encourage us to build a progressive, civilized and well-cultured society.

Sita is believed to originate in the farmland when Mithila’s King Janak performed the Yagya
ritual and ploughed the land in Treta Yug as per Valmiki Ramayana.
