A Sri Lankan lawmaker has opened fire on anti- government protesters, then shoot himself

Kathmandu, May 10

During a violent conflict between pro-government and anti-government protestors in Sri Lanka, a legislator committed suicide.

According to the BBC, ruling party MP Amarkirti Athukoral opened fire on anti-government
protestors on Monday before shooting himself. The event occurred in the outskirts of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital.

According to the news agency, two persons attempting to stop Amarkirti’s car in Nittambua were shot by police. One person was shot dead by him.

In an attempt to leave the crowd, he took shelter in a nearby building. The crowd surrounded the building where he was hiding. He then took his own life.

In conflicts between pro-government and anti-government protestors in Sri Lanka on Monday, five persons were killed and 138 were injured. Meanwhile, Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, has resigned.

Sri Lankan citizens are upset by the country’s economic problems. Every day, they protest against the government.
