Kathmandu, April 26
The condition of religious freedom in India ”deteriorated” last year, according to a US commission. The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has reached this conclusion.
The panel also called for targeted penalties on the government as a result of the suspected
wrongdoing. The panel has proposed that India be included in the US list of ”countries of particular interest” for the third year in a row.
India was accused of ”serious violations of religious freedom” by the panel. ”The Indian government has adopted policies supporting the Hindu-nationalist agenda throughout the year, which have had a severe impact on Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, and other religious minorities,” the study added.
”The government has adjusted its ideological approach to the Hindu state, both at the national and state levels, employing existing and new legislation and structural changes to the harm of the country’s religious minorities,” the study further said.
