Nepal’s international relations have expanded to 175 nations

Nepal’s international relations have expanded to 175 nations. Today, Nepal and the Republic of South Sudan established diplomatic ties, bringing the total number of nations with whom bilateral diplomatic relations have been established to 175.

At a brief ceremony held at Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York on Monday, Nepal’s Ambassador to the United Nations Amrit Bahadur Rai and Ambassador of the Republic of South Sudan to the United Nations Akuai Bona Malwal signed a joint statement on the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations.

According to the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in New York, the two
ambassadors also signed a joint letter alerting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of the creation of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

The two ambassadors addressed several subjects of mutual interest to strengthen bilateral
cooperation for the mutual benefit of the two nations in a national and global context,
particularly in UN forums. In the context of the ongoing peace process in South Sudan, they also discussed how to make the transition from conflict to peace a success.

Ambassador Rai stated that Nepal was eager to share its experience in the country’s peace process in order to help South Sudan achieve peace. Nepal has contributed to South Sudan’s peace and stability by sending 1,800 Nepalese troops to the UN peacekeeping mission in the country.

On July 9, 2011, South Sudan, a country in East-Central Africa, declared its independence from Sudan. Nepal and South Sudan are both members of the Least Developed Countries Group, Landlocked Developing Countries Group, Group 77, and China. South Sudan became the 193rd member of the United Nations on July 14, 201s1, making it the international body’s youngest member.
