Nationwide protests against MCC agreement

The ruling Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Socialist) on Sunday staged nationwide protests, saying the US aid agency Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement could not be passed by parliament in the status quo.

The ruling CPN (Maoist Center) has started a street agitation after Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is also the Prime Minister, tried to move ahead to get the MCC agreement passed by the parliament in the status quo.

Unified socialists and people’s organizations have jointly protested all over the country including Kathmandu.

The MCC agreement cannot be passed in the status quo, repeal the MCC agreement, the constitution of Nepal is at the top.

There is now a five-party coalition government. However, Prime Minister Deuba has moved ahead with the strategy of tabling in the parliament. Despite repeated discussions between the top leaders on the issue, no agreement has been reached.

The Unified Socialists, the Maoist Center, the JSP, and the Rashtriya Janamorcha, which are in a five-party alliance, have been standing in favor of the MCC agreement not being passed by the parliament in the status quo. However, the ruling Nepali Congress is pursuing a strategy of passing the MCC anyway.
