Biden warns of shutting down Russian gas pipeline to Germany

Kathmandu, February 8, 2022

US President Joe Biden has warned that if Russia invades Ukraine, it will cut off gas pipelines from Russia to Germany.

Speaking at a news conference after a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Solz in
Washington, President Biden said that the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany would be terminated, according to the BBC.

The talks between the US and German heads of state came after French President Emmanuel Macron held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Schulz met with US President Biden after a German statement was disputed amid tensions
between Russia and Ukraine.

The Nord Stream-2 natural gas pipeline runs from the bottom of the Baltic Sea to Russia to
Germany. European partners in the US and Germany have been opposed to the gas pipeline since the beginning.

Because of the growing dependence of European countries on the Russian gas pipeline and the possibility of Russia using it as a weapon to its advantage in the event of a dispute.

Therefore, the United States and other countries had earlier discussed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to scrap the gas pipeline.
