Local level elections cannot be postponed: Agni Kharel

Kathmandu, January 25

CPN-UML Standing Committee Member Agni Kharel has said that no one can extend the five-year term of the local government as stipulated by the constitution.

Speaking to reporters at Birtamod in Jhapa on Tuesday, he said that the UML would not
tolerate any move to postpone the local elections by violating the constitution.

He said, ”Elections to be held in Baishak cannot be postponed to mangsir.” This is a local
government, not a local body. There is a clear provision in the constitution that its term will be five years.’

He alleged that the government was ready to push the local level in the situation of confusion without people’s representatives as in the past.

He is of the view that the five-year period at the local level should not be extended even for
one day and one day without people’s representatives.

UML leader Kharel has accused the government of holding early elections or holding elections at all three levels at the same time.
