Local elections cannot be postponed: UML leader Kharel

CPN-UML Standing Committee Member and Former Law Minister Agni Kharel has said that no one can extend the five-year term of the local level government as stipulated by the
constitution.

Speaking at a press meet at Birtamod in Jhapa today, he said that the UML would not tolerate any move to postpone the local elections by violating the constitution. “Elections to be held in Baishakh cannot be postponed to Mangsir. This is a local government, not a local body. The constitution has a clear provision of five years,” he said.

He alleged that the government was ready to push the local level in the situation of confusion without people’s representatives as in the past. He is of the view that the five-year period at the local level should not be extended even for one day and one day without people’s representatives. UML leader Kharel has accused the government of planning to hold early elections or holding elections at all three levels at once.
