For the first time in Pakistan, a woman is a Supreme Court judge

For the first time in Pakistan, a woman judge has been appointed to the Supreme Court. Judge Ayesha Malik made history on Monday when she was sworn in as a Supreme Court judge.

On Thursday, Pakistan’s Judicial Service Commission (JCP) recommended Malik for the post of Supreme Court judge. Four of the five members of the commission voted in her favor. Supreme Court Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed on Monday administered the oath of office and secrecy to Malik.

It was not easy for Malik to become a judge of the Supreme Court. Because her promotion was opposed by lawyers across the country. In terms of seniority, she was ranked fourth in the Lahore High Court. The Pakistan War Council had also announced agitation against Malik’s appointment.

One of the 17 Supreme Court judges retired in August, leaving one seat vacant.
