Chinese shipbuilders topped the three major indexes used by the global shipbuilding industry in 2021, achieving the highest number of completed orders, newly received orders and orders on hand, marking a strong start to the first year of 14th Five Year Plan period 2021-25, according to the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI) on Sunday.

Across the three indexes, China’s shipbuilders accounted for about 50 percent of total global volume, with China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), China’s largest shipbuilding company, surpassing South Korean Hyundai Heavy Industries to become the world’s largest shipbuilder for the first time.

CSSC completed and delivered 206 ships in 2021, accounting for 20.2 percent of global order volume. The value of CSSC’s newly received order contracts hit 130.15 billion yuan, the highest record since 2008. CSSC also had 41.953 million tons worth of orders at hand, outperforming its 2021 annual goal, according to another report released by CANSI on January 13.
