For the first time since the Taliban overthrew the government in August, the budget has been made public. However, the budget does not mention foreign aid. The government on
Wednesday approved 53.90 billion afghanis (508 million) for the first four months of 2022.
All the expenses will be borne by the government institutions. Spokesperson Hakmal said that the employees who have not been paid for months will be paid from the end of January. He also said that female employees who were not allowed to go to the office after the Taliban came to power would be paid.
About 40 percent of Afghanistan’s GDP depended on international aid. Earlier, before the
Taliban came to power, 80 percent of the government’s budget was spent on foreign aid. But since the Taliban came to power, the West has cut off billions of dollars in aid. The United Nations says an economic crisis has erupted in Afghanistan after international aid was cut off.
“For the first time in two decades, we have announced a budget that is not dependent on
foreign aid, which is a great achievement for us,” said Ahmed Wali Hakmal, a spokesman for the Taliban’s finance ministry.
