New record for corona infection in Australia: 147,000 more added in one day

Kathmandu, January 13

The number of Covid-19 infected people in Australia has reached an all-time high since the
onset of the epidemic.

The number of daily infections in Australia set a new record on Thursday. According to Al
Jazeera, more than 147,000 new infections have been reported there today. Another 53 people died of the infection.

But the death toll from the Omicron wave in Australia is lower than ever before. There, more than 92 percent of people over the age of 16 have had a second cob vaccine. With the total number of hospital admissions and ICU treatments still high, the health system could cope with the growing infection, officials said.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) said last week that more people had been
infected with COVID-19 worldwide than ever before. According to the organization, 15 million corona infections were reported worldwide between January 2 and 9.

On Wednesday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adanom Gebreis said the number of covid
infections added last week was 55 percent higher than previously confirmed weekly. He also said that the number of infected people has increased due to the Omicron variant.

Although highly contagious Omicron can cause serious illness in patients, the delta variant is less lethal than the non-vaccinated variant, Gabrius said.
