Let’s not call Omicron ‘less lethal’: WHO

Kathmandu, January 7

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the Omicron variant is ”less lethal” and that it is killing people around the world. Recent studies have shown that Omicron does not make people more serious than previous variants. However, the WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebresius, said it had put a strain on the health system, with a record number of people being infected.

More than one million infected people were added to the United States every 24 hours on
Monday. According to the WHO, the number of infected people worldwide has risen by 71
percent in the past week, compared to 100 percent in the United States. Ninety percent of
critically ill people are unvaccinated.

”Omicron is less lethal in vaccinated people than in Delta, but it cannot be classified as mild,” he told a news conference on Thursday. ”Like previous variants, Omicron is hospitalizing and killing people,”; Tedros said. The tsunami is so strong and devastating that it is wreaking havoc on health systems around the world. ”

Omicron is highly contagious and can infect even vaccinated people. However, vaccines are said to prevent serious illness. A total of 179,756 people were infected and 231 died in the UK on Thursday. The number of corona infections is also increasing in other parts of the world. Delta reported increased pressure on the ICU, while Omicron reported increased pressure on the general beds.
