Indications that Deuja and Thapa will compete for the chairmanship of Bhaktapur UML

Indications that Deuja and Thapa will compete for the chairmanship of Bhaktapur UML

As per the decision of the second central committee of the CPN-UML, district conventions are being held across the country on Poush 23. Although the center has directed to select the leadership as unanimously as possible, it does not seem possible in most of the districts. The eighth district convention of the Bhaktapur district committee is being held at a party palace in Chundevi of Suryabinayak on Poush 23.

So far, two people have claimed who will be the next leader of the district. Incumbent Bachan Deuja and Bagmati MP Shashi Jung Thapa have unofficially announced the chairman.

The UML party committee is preparing to hold the inaugural session on Poush 23 and the
closed session on Poush 24. Chairman’s claimant Thapa said, “Even if Rajendra Rajthal was
released in the name of consensus in the last seventh convention, this time I will not release anyone.”

He says he has been left without a role in the party’s work for eight years and has moved
forward as everyone has suggested him to take the lead in this convention. On the other hand, Deuja said that he was preparing to run for the post of party president as he had made the UML the first force in Bhaktapur by leading the party in adverse conditions.

According to a source, the two parties are preparing to form a panel to enter the 105-member committee from the eighth district convention.

If Thapa is the candidate for the post, Ram Bahadur Shrestha or Mohan Bir Shrestha will be the vice-chairman from his group. A leader said that Mohan Bir or Madan Sundar Shrestha could be the secretary. Meanwhile, the current chairperson Deuja group has been saying that they have not been able to form a team as they are trying to make the party convention grand. It is seen that Basudev Thapa from Deuja group will be the vice-chairman.

UML Politburo member Mahesh Basnet, central members Somprasad Mishra, Nirmal Bhattarai, Ganesh Dulal Pradesh Committee’s Nawaraj Gelal, Saraswati Vati and other leaders have not made it public who will support which group. A total of 509 delegates will participate in the closed session of the UML’s eighth convention in Bhaktapur.
