Kathmandu, January 5
Three people have been arrested in India for allegedly auctioning off more than 100 Muslim
women with pictures on an online app called ‘Bully Bai’.
The Mumbai Police Cyber Crime Branch on Wednesday arrested another person on suspicion of being involved in the ‘Bully Bai’ app case, PTI reported. Police have arrested Mayank Rawal, a 21-year-old student from Uttarakhand.
Rawal is the third person to be arrested in the ‘Bully Bai&’ case. Police have already arrested two persons on Monday and Tuesday. Vishal Kumar, 21, who was studying engineering from Bengaluru on Monday and Shweta Singh, 19, from Uttarakhand were arrested on Tuesday. Singh is believed to be the main character in the scandal.
This is the second time in a year that a Muslim woman has been put up for auction in an online app. Even six months ago, about 80 women were put up for sale in an app called ‘Sulli Dilsu’. But no arrests have been made so far.
The Indian government is investigating the news that more than 100 women have been put up for auction with pictures in an app created with the word ‘bully bai’, an insulting word for Muslim women.
A few days ago, a Muslim woman in India said that she created a ‘Bully Buy’ app in a software called GitHub owned by Microsoft without permission.
Ismat Ara, a Delhi-based journalist, said that she had lodged a complaint with the police on
Sunday saying that she too had been targeted by the app. She has even accused Bully Bai of trying to abuse a Muslim woman.
”The GitHub is violent and dangerous, and its goal is to instill fear and inferiority in the minds of all women, including women in the Muslim community who are being targeted with hatred,” she said.
