Jajarkot-Jumla tunnel: Feasibility study started

A tunnel connecting Jajarkot and Jumla is to be constructed. A tunnel connecting Kushe
Gaonpalika-8 Sangta of Jajarkot and Tatopani Gaonpalika-8 Emilchaghari of Jumla will be
constructed. The Center for Quality Research and Development (QRDC) of the Road
Department has already issued the information for the feasibility study.

Former Minister Shakti Bahadur Basnet said that the Department of Roads has invited bids for the feasibility study of the tunnel and the construction of the tunnel will move ahead after the completion of the study. “Feasibility studies are underway to build tunnels and open new road tracks. As this will be the shortest tunnel connecting Jajarkot and Jumla, the excavation work will be started as soon as the study is completed.” he said.

The length from Jajarkot Sangta and Jumla to Emilchaghari is about 10 kilometers. For the
construction of the tunnel, about five kilometers of mountain holes should be dug and roads should be constructed in other areas, said former minister Basnet. “We have been demanding the government of Nepal for a feasibility study of the tunnel from the past,” said CPN (Maoist Center) leader and state assembly member Ganesh Prasad Singh.

From Jajarkot to Jumla you must walk uphill for about 10 hours. Singh said that Jumla can be reached in 30 minutes if the tunnel is constructed. “If this tunnel is constructed, it will be a short circuit connecting Rara via Lumbini, Dang, Salyan, Jajarkot and Jumla,” he said.
