Government ready to withdraw party split ordinance

The government is preparing to withdraw the ordinance on division of political parties following pressure from within the ruling coalition. Leaders of the ruling coalition, who met at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Sunday, are ready to withdraw the ordinance on political parties and complete the cabinet.

“There has been a wide-ranging discussion within the coalition on the party split ordinance. It has been agreed to discuss and decide on the issue of withdrawal. The decision will be taken soon after discussions at the top level,” said a coalition leader.

At a meeting held in Baluwatar, Upendra Yadav, chairman of Janata Samajwadi Party, a coalition party has been taking a stand not to participate in the government until the ordinance on political parties is withdrawn. Even on Saturday, he reiterated the same stance in the coalition meeting.

In a meeting on Saturday, Yadav had said that he would not join the government until the ordinance is withdrawn as the government has weakened the party system by bringing an ordinance on party split. He did not attend Sunday meeting, saying he was still standing. After Yadav did not give up his stance, the leaders have agreed to withdraw the ordinance after holding discussions at the top level.

Earlier, the parties affiliated to the coalition has discussed about bringing a replacement bill for the ordinance. The ordinance has been tabled in the House of Representatives on 23 Bhadra.
