The export of cardamom, the number one commodity produced in the country, has doubled. Exports have double as demand for cardamom has increased in the international market, according to Business Online.
According to the data of the Customs Department, in the first 11 months of the current Fiscal Year, the export has increased by 93.7 percent to Rs. 84.48 million 503 kg was exported in the same period last year.
Cardamom produced in the country is being exported to Pakistan, Dubai and European countries including India. It is being cultivated commercially in other districts including Taplejung, Panchthar, Ilam, Tehrathum, Sankhuwasabha, Dhankuta, Bhojpur and Gorkha. It is cultivated in 15,400 hectors of land in Nepal. According to traders, the country produces 5,000 tonnes of cardamom annually. Trade expert Purushottam Ojha said that the increase in exports of indigenous goods was positive. He said that special emphasis should be laid on production to increase exports as exports could not increased in proportion to the increase in imports.
Similarly, tea exports have increased significantly in the last 11 months. According to the department, tea exports have increased by 71.5 percent in the last 11 months, reaching Rs 1,036,586 kg worth Rs 3.53 billion. In the corresponding period of the previous year, 83 lakh 25 thousand 787 kg worth Rs. 2.65 billion 36 lakh eight thousand has been exported.
Similarly, the export of woollen and felt goods increased by 92 percent to Rs 3.56 billion. Exports during the same period last year stood at Rs 1.75 billion. During the same 11-month period, exports of noodles and pasta increased by 67 percent to Rs 1.569 billion. 934.55 million in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Similarly, exports of woollen carpets increased by 17.5 percent to Rs 6.47 billion. Exports of readymade garments increased by 5.9 percent to Rs 4.81 billion, according to the department. Soybean oil has been the biggest export in 11 months. Soybean oil exports increased by 318 percent to Rs 42.34 billion, according to the department. The raw materials of soybean have been imported to Nepal, processed and re-exported. Soybean raw material worth Rs 45.59 billion has been imported in the last 11 months.
