Chief Minister Attends “SICA Stands by You” programme at Mining Ground.

Gangtok, June 20: The Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang attended the “SICA Stands by You” programme, an initiative of the Sikkim Cricket Association to provide financial aid to the players considering the current COVID- 19 situation, at Mining Ground, East Sikkim..

In his address, the Chief Minister hailed the unique initiative by SICA and acknowledged the concern of the association towards the players, especially during the time of the pandemic. He stated that cricket has recently gained much prominence in the state and has been a great source of employment for the youths and has more potential going forward. Going back to the days when the Hon’ble Chief Minister was the concerned Minister of sports department, he reminisced the days and informed about the struggles to develop sports in the state and his personal interventions to provide recognition and platform for the youths during those days. He added that his intentions remain the same and the government will do everything in its power to develop the field of sports in the state and provide a platform for the upcoming generation.

He emphasized on developing proper infrastructures and facilities at various levels in the state to motivate and generate interest among the people especially the youths. The Chief Minister encouraged the youths to be dedicated towards their endeavours and assured of assistance from the association and the government to help them advance in their careers.
He mentioned that contrary to the previous government’s philosophy, none of his family member is indulged in money-oriented lucrative activities, rather they are rendering a helping hand and support to the ailing and poor people of Sikkim.
The Chief Minister affirmed to continue with the same intentions and aspirations and work towards the benefit of the entire Sikkimese people rather than personal gains and accolades.
During the programme various category of Cricket players including senior players, U-16 and women’s team were handed incentives as an aid for sustenance during the pandemic.
The Chief Minister also felicitated the Sikkim Cricket team who were Champions of U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy, Zonal Champion 2019-20 including players and staff.

Similarly, Sikkim Cricket Association contributed a sum of Rs.15 lakhs to Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to combat COVID19 while various local clubs jointly contributed a sum of Rs. 51,000/- to the CMRF. In this regards, the Chief Minister expressed his gratitude for their kind gesture and also informed that the CMRF is utilized within austerity and in a transparent way which can be verified by everyone if desired.

The event was also attended by Minister Kunga Nima Lepcha, Advisor IPR, Shri Birendra Tamling, Secretary (Sports) Raju Basnet, Confidential Secretary to CM Bikash Basnet, President and members of Rangpo Nagar Panchayat, officials of East District Administration, President and members of SICA, local gentry in addition to press and media were present on the occasion.
