The former Chancellor of Germany writes: In the last few years, the world situation has changed fundamentally. The new administration, led by US president Joe Biden, sees China as one of the biggest diplomatic, economic and security challenges of the century, and urges Europe to take part in anti-China action. Is it wise to do? Is it in Europe’s interest? Is there an alternative to the new Cold war?
As a trading, investment and development partner, China is gaining worldwide acclaim and is more successful than Europe in the field of epidemic control, and the economic recovery is faster than in other parts of the world.
Even though China is a difficult political partner, European should not allow the United States to go to war with the Cold War. The Biden government’s move to keep Western values above interests by keeping its diplomatic policy ethical is going in the wrong direction. By taking such a stand, we will not able to face the global challenges and difficulties, including climate change and epidemics, but will only succeed through the joint efforts the international community.
We must protect our interests by establishing stable international relations in times of great ups and downs. Although value-based ideas are important, they should not be seen as the only criteria for formulating diplomatic and economic policy. The multilateral format should be promoted through conversation. This is the best way to help.
