China’s cellphone subscribers nationwide are expected to be able to switch service carriers without changing phone numbers by the end of November this year, said an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Nearly 2 million cellphone users in China have already switched service operators with their phone numbers unchanged by far, said Chen Zhaoxiong, vice minister of MIIT at a press briefing Tuesday.
The ministry has conducted related experiments in five provinces and municipalities, and will work to ensure that nationwide users can keep their numbers when switching carriers before November 30.
The job requires necessary reforms in networks and operating systems of the country’s three major telecom operators, China Mobile, China Union and China Telecom, he said.
In recent years, China has continuously strengthened the network infrastructure construction and promoted the speeding-up of broadband and lower Internet rates, according to Chen.
