China’s fourth telecom player China Broadnet comes online, connects to 5G signal

China’s state-owned radio and TV carrier China Broadnet launched its official website on Monday, announcing it has started 5G mobile phone services.

Xiang Ligang, director-general of the Beijing-based Information Consumption Alliance, told the Global Times on Monday that China Broadnet had acquired a telecom carrier operation license, which is the same as ones held by China’s another three telecom giants China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. China Broadnet has since become the fourth player in the sector.

“However, China Broadnet doesn’t have its own network or infrastructure, thus the new comer had to make agreement with China Mobile and share its network,” Xiang noted. He also mentioned that the sharing-network may reduce the cost for consumers but that the service has same signal quality as China Mobile.

Xiang suggested that China Broadnet will expand the telecom market in Chinese mainland but won’t make too much impact due to its relatively small market share.

According to China Broadnet’s official website, a 4G phone number kit is selling for between 38 ($5.68) and 68 yuan each month, while a 5G phone number kit is selling for between 118 and 588 yuan each month.
