In case of sexual violence, the deadline for filing a complaint cannot be removed: Minister Sharma

Kathmandu, June 6

Govinda Prasad Sharma, Minister of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, has stated that the time limit for submitting a complaint in cases of rape and sexual violence cannot be eliminated soon. Minister Sharma clarified the government’s position on Monday in response to a question from MPs in the House of Representatives, saying that the deadline for registering a complaint could not be eliminated without the Nepal Law Commission’s research report.

He stated that the government is concerned about rape and sexual violence events and that the government is willing to alter the legislation to eliminate the time limit on filing a complaint only if the commission’s research report is accepted. Minister Sharma further stated that as soon as he became a minister, he ordered the Law Commission to submit a study on the Supreme Court’s time restriction in order to avoid denying victims justice owing to the time limit.

According to the Supreme Court’s judgment, the time limit for submitting a complaint for the incident has been set at one year. Minister Sharma stated that the administration was dedicated to reducing rape and sexual assault.
