Kathmandu, June 1
Balendra Shah, the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, conducted informal meetings with residents of the Sisdol and Bancharedanda dump sites till 10 p.m. on Monday to discuss how to dispose of the capital’s garbage. At the meeting, just a few local party activists and secretariat personnel from Mayor Sah’s office were present.
Shri Ram Dhungana, the local struggle committee’s coordinator, who played a key role in the government’s negotiations, was not invited. Locals have been more assertive, claiming that just a few people were called on their own. Following the mayor’s declaration, residents have stated that they will not allow rubbish to be dumped until Mayor Shah’s promise is kept.
Shah, who was recently reinstated, said that if he requested a few days to dispose of the waste, he could satisfy the demand in a few days. We will not allow trash to be dumped.’ Sah and several volunteers arrived at the Sisdol and Bancharedanda dump sites on Friday afternoon, the same day as the mayor’s victory.
