Nepali peacekeeper killed in Congo

Kathmandu, April 6

A Nepali peacekeeper has been killed in the line of duty in Congo.

On Tuesday, a group of militias attacked a squad of Nepali peacekeepers led by Lieutenant
Colonel Nikil Kunwar.

According to the Nepal Army’s Directorate of Public Relations and Information, the deceased has been identified as Anil Gurung of Surkhet’s Gurbhakot-14.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres in the condolence message has offered
tributes to the deceased and condemned the lethal attack on the peacekeepers.

The attack occurred at a time when Nepali peacekeepers had captured the militias’ stronghold following a cordon and search operation, according to the Nepal Army Headquarters.

Critically injured Gurung, who had been airlifted to Level 2 Hospital in Bunia from the incident site, breathed his last in the course of treatment.

Meanwhile, the UN has urged the authorities of the Republic of Congo to bring the guilty to
book following through investigation saying that an attack on the peacekeepers is a war crime.
